The Reason for God: Belief in an age of skepticism
Last Update:

Review:

Overview

Why does God allow suffering in the world? How could a loving God send people to Hell? Why isn’t Christianity more inclusive? How can one religion be “right” and the others “wrong”? Why have so many wars been fought in the name of God?These are just a few of the questions and doubts even ardent believers wrestle with today. As the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, Timothy Keller has compiled a list of the most frequently voiced “doubts” skeptics bring to his church as well as the most important reasons for faith. And in the New York Times bestselling The Reason for God, he addresses each doubt and explains each reason.

Keller uses literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and reasoning to explain how faith in a Christian God is a soundly rational belief, held by thoughtful people of intellectual integrity with a deep compassion for those who truly want to know the truth.

1. The Reason for God: A Critical Interactive Review

I love the good news of Jesus Christ.  I love apologetics.  I love good writing.  And I love Tim Keller.  Therefore it is very difficult for me to be objective about The Reason for God.  Given my past experience I expected this book to be a feast and it is; well written, cogent, interesting and full of fascinating information.  It also raises lot of questions for me - which to my mind is what a good book should do.  I raise some of these in the review below....

1. The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism

The End of FaithThe God DelusionGod Is Not GreatLetter to a Christian Nation. Best seller lists are filled with doubters. But what happens when you actually doubt your doubts?

Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

3. LÆS ET UDDRAG AF GUD FOR SKEPTIKERE GUD FOR SKEPTIKERE (Danish Edition)

Keller har i mange år været præst i Redeemer Presbyterian Church i New York.

5. Jumala olemasolu põhjendus (Estonian Edition)

New York City Manhattani Lunastaja presbüterliku koguduse rajaja Timothy Kellerit peetakse 21. sajandi C.S Lewiseks. New York Timesi bestselleris „Jumala olemasolu tõestuseks“ käsitleb autor kõige sagedasemaid kahtlusi, mis tekivad skeptikutel ja usuvõõrastel seoses religiooniga. Toetudes kirjandusele, filosoofiale, antropoloogiale, populaarkultuurile ja mõistuspärasele argumentatsioonile selgitab Keller, kuidas usk kristlikku Jumalasse on sisuliselt mõistlik ja ratsionaalne.

6. Mihin Jumalaa tarvitaan? (Finnish Edition)

POINTS FORTS : Best seller du New York Time. Auteur à succès. Sujet intemporel.

- William Edgar, Coordinator of the Apologetics Dept., Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia

“World Magazine telah meninjau sekitar dua ratus buku selama setahun terakhir. World’s Magazine Book of The Year tahun ini adalah Rasio Bagi Allah dari Tim Keller. " - World Magazine

- Trevin Wax, Senior Vice President of Theology and Communications at Lifeway Christian Resources and a Visiting Professor at Wheaton College

12. Gud? Kristen tro møter moderne skepsis (Norwegian Edition)

Hvorfor tillater Gud lidelse?

Livro best-seller segundo o New York Times

14. Argument pentru Dumnezeu. Credinta intr-o epoca a scepticismului (Romanian Edition)

The Reason for God -- BESTSELLER NEW YORK TIMES

-- The Washington Post

"Keller va ramane in amintire ca un pionier in lucrarea crestina urbana."

-- Revista Christianity Today

"Convingatoare... Reconfortanta...

-- Billy Graham

-- The New York Times

-- Revista New York

-- The Boston Globe

15. Varför ska jag tro på Gud? (Swedish Edition)

In the video sessions (DVD/digital video sold separately), Timothy Keller and six panelists hold candid and unscripted discussions about the broad scope of people's discomforts with God, the Bible, and Christianity in general:

  • Discussion 1: Is the Bible a myth? Has science disproved Christianity?
  • Discussion 2: Is there only one way to God? Are other religions as valid?
  • Discussion 3: Clashes with Christian morality and ethics – why are there so many rules?
  • Discussion 4: Why would God allow suffering and evil.
  • Discussion 5: Injustice and hypocrisy in the church.
  • Discussion 6: Objections to God's wrath and judgement.

The Reason for God small group discussion guide can be used individually or in a group setting by anyone engaging with friends who don't share his or her beliefs. For each discussion, the study guide includes:

  • An opening thought on the topic.
  • A summary of the objection to the topic.
  • Related Bible verses.
  • Space for notetaking.
  • Questions for group discussion.

In his New York Times bestselling book, The Reason for God, Timothy Keller established himself as a modern-day C. S. Lewis who brings together faith and intellect, theology and popular culture, modern-day objections and historic Christian beliefs. Using literature, philosophy, and Scripture, Keller explores the truth and challenge of Christianity in this six-session small group conversation starter.

You and your group will be challenged to wrestle with your friends' and neighbors' hardest questions and engage those questions in ways that will spark honest, enriching, and humbling dialogue.

Designed for use with Reason for God Video Study (sold separately).

2. Reader’s Guide for The Reason for God by Timothy Keller (Dutton, 2008)

By Penguin Reader Guide

When you read books that make a case for believing in God, you quickly get the feeling that they are written primarily for those who already believe. The authors of such books tend to gloss over the hardest questions about God.

Timothy Keller is different. Not only does he not shy away from the hard questions, he addresses them with the seriousness they deserve. And while The Reason for God can and should be read to great benefit by believers, it’s a valuable resource for skeptics. Keller speaks to serious doubters, agnostics, and atheists with the same respect he would show to members of his Manhattan church. The Reason for God is worthwhile reading for believers who seek a more reasonable basis for Christian faith, and for nonbelievers who are open to reasoned arguments in favor of God’s existence.

This reader’s guide will help you explore some of the questions—and the corresponding defenses of God’s existence—that you will find in The Reason for God. The discussion questions that follow are designed to be used in a group setting, with two or more people who are reading Keller’s book. Discussing with other readers your own questions and your reactions to Keller’s arguments will stimulate further reflection and will lead to new insights. Since most of the reader’s guide questions grow out of the book’s content, this guide will be most useful to bookclubs and reading groups that meet for periodic discussions as they read the book.
