Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.
In the year King Uzziah died, the prophet Isaiah saw a vision of the Holy One of Israel that made him understand the horror of sin and gave him a passion to proclaim the hope of restoration to all who would turn from their wickedness. In like manner, if we truly understand God’s holiness, we too will be motivated to flee from evil and to cling to Him for salvation.
Our understanding of the Lord’s transcendent holiness impacts how we view worship and how we will acknowledge the depth of our sin. In this expanded edition of his classic series The Holiness of God, Dr. R.C. Sproul provides a comprehensive, biblical survey of God’s holy character and demonstrates how the demands of His holiness are met in Christ.
Whatever it may be, good or bad, nothing compares to the life changing experience of a person who encounters the holiness of God. The holiness of God has been a life-pursuit of Dr. Sproul, as he proclaims, teaches, and defends God's holiness in all its fullness. In this message, Dr. Sproul celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the original release of his book The Holiness of God, and looks at "The Otherness of God."
As Christians, we know that God is present everywhere at all times. But what happens to us when we truly sense His presence in our lives? In this message, Dr. Sproul talks about the awkward mixture of feelings people have when they sense the presence of the Holy One.
How do many people remember Uzziah, the king of Judah in the southern kingdom of Israel? Thinking about him, it actually isn't so much his life that has significance for us today, but his death. What was so special about that occasion? What can we learn about ourselves? Dr. Sproul considers this as he discusses "The Fall of a Hero."
Every day when we go outside we are bombarded with potentially blinding light rays from the sun. But as awesome as our sun may seem, it pales in comparison to the infinite glory of God. In this message, Dr. Sproul talks about the heavenly beings described in Isaiah chapter six as they worship in God's direct and immediate presence. What protects them from God's full unmitigated glory? Even more important, what will protect us?
Every country has its own anthem; but is there an anthem just for God? Is there a royal anthem for the King of Kings? What do the citizens of heaven sing in unity, and how can we sing in concert with them? In this message, Dr. Sproul teaches us a timeless song found in our Bible. The words are short and simple, but nothing could be more profound.
It seems people have a problem seeing the majesty of God. Is God in hiding? Does He reveal Himself only to those who believe? In this message, Dr. Sproul shows us where to look if we really want to see "The Majesty of God."
Where does your sense of worth or value come from? Try as we may to measure ourselves by ourselves, we will never properly esteem ourselves until we find a reliable standard. That's exactly what Isaiah did, and in this message Dr. Sproul looks at the sixth chapter of the book of Isaiah to teach us what happened to Isaiah when he met that standard.
The prophet Isaiah was a man who lived his whole life in the Holy Land. He was raised with the Scriptures, went to the Temple, and knew the law of God. But it wasn't until his encounter with the holy One of Israel that Isaiah understood the depth of his sin. In the message entitled "Here I Am, Send Me," Dr. Sproul looks at this account in Isaiah chapter six.
How much fear of God is considered abnormal? The atheist would say that any fear of God is too much since God doesn't exist. For those who have encountered the one true God, they would probably say we do not fear Him enough. The prophet Isaiah encountered the living God and that encounter changed him forever. What was it in particular that struck terror in the soul of Isaiah? As Dr. Sproul explains in this message, the answer is not found in the false gods of this world, rather it is found in none other than "The Real God."
The disciples in Jesus' day experienced a crisis like never before while on the Sea of Galilee. Although some were experienced fisherman who had faced bad weather before, they were not prepared to face the calm after the storm. What terrified the disciples so much that night? Dr. Sproul considers this question in the message entitled "Who is this Jesus?"
Since God is so gracious, merciful, kind, good, and loving, why on earth would anyone run from Him? What is it about Jesus that causes people not to want to be in His presence? Dr. Sproul looks at the answers to these questions in his message entitled "A New Perspective."
It seems that for every possible scenario in life, people have devised appropriate clothing to match the occasion. So, what is the dress code for holiness? Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves from the unrelenting nature of holiness? In this message entitled "Covering the Shame," Dr. Sproul explains what God has done on our behalf to meet the demands of holiness.
Could it be that some of the events in the Old Testament are incompatible with the God of the New Testament? In the New Testament, we read of God's attributes like mercy, grace, and love being perfectly exhibited in the life of his only-begotten Son. However, many people today have a hard time accepting sections of the Old Testament due to its striking exhibition of God's holiness and justice. Dr. Sproul explains that people in the Old Testament also had a hard time accepting these events as he looks at "A Hard Lesson Learned."
Why does God punish His own children so severely for making what seem to be harmless mistakes? As in the case with Uzzah, who placed his hand on the Ark of the Covenant—in an instant, he died as a direct result of God's judgment. Why would God strike down one of His own people with such severity? Where was God's grace that day? Dr. Sproul answers this difficult question in the message entitled "The Untouchable."
Sometimes we forget that there is more to God than grace, mercy, and love; there is also justice and holiness. What is the difference between justice and grace, and how does that apply to the Christian life? In this message, Dr. Sproul helps us understand more about the severity of holiness, the justness of justice, and the graciousness of grace.
